Sun - The Star of our Solar System
The features of the Sun are as follows :-
⇒ Sun is the centre of our Solar System .
⇒ Sun gets its energy or fuel from nuclear fusion.
⇒ Sun is the ultimate source of energy for the Earth.
⇒ It is therefore a necessary condition for life to exist.
⇒ The Sun is a gigantic ball of heat and light energy which has a lot of energy in the form of chemical reactions.
⇒ The Sun has a middle core , where the temperature can reach even millions .
⇒ The Sun is visible during the night and is not seen at night from Earth.
⇒ The Sun is responsible for the phenomenon of day and night.
⇒ It is the cause of life because if Sun was not there then there would have been no plants and hence no life would sustain on Earth.
Structure of the Sun :
The Sun is made up of :
(i) Inner core
(ii) Middle radiative zone
(iii) Outer convective zone
How the Sun gets it's energy ?
Nuclear fusion reaction is a nuclear reaction in which two light nuclei fuse together to form a heavy nucleus thereby releasing large amounts of energy.
In the core of the sun , the hydrogen atoms are fused to produce Helium and energy is released.
Most of this energy is released in the form of light which plants utilize for photosynthesis.
Necessity of Sun for existence of life :
If sun would not have been there then :
(i) Earth would have been too cold for life to sustain.
(ii) No one could get food for survival.
(iii) Green plants would not have survived.
(iv) Hence no organism could have survived in this condition.
Facts about Sun :
(i) The Sun has about 98% of the total mass of the Solar System.
(ii) The Sun is about 1,000 times bigger than Jupiter , the largest planet in our Solar System !
(iii) The Sun generates its own magnetic field and has immense gravitational power to hold all the planets in position.
(iv) Light takes 8 minutes from Sun to reach Earth .
When will Sun-the ultimate fuel would die ?
It will die as soon as its fuel is finished .
It will be approximately billions of years . So no worries.
The Sun will eventually turn to a white dwarf after its mass collapses.
State of Sun
The temperature at the surface of the Sun would be thousands and in that condition the atoms enter into the 4 th State of Matter.
The fourth state of matter is called plasma which is the state where the gas ionises.
Hence almost every atom of the Sun is in the plasma state.
Sun - the Guardian of the Solar System!
Sun is the centre of the Universe.
And you will not believe that the Sun has 98 % of the total mass of the Solar System .
Many people regard it as a God !
