Megasporogenesis and development of female gametophyte
The formation of megaspores insidethe ovules of seed plants. A diploidcell in the ovule, called amegasporocyte or a megasporemother cell, undergoes meiosis andgives rise to four haploidmegaspores. In most plants, only oneof the megaspores then goes on todevelop into a megagametophytewithin the ovule, while the other threedisintegrate. In the ovules ofangiosperms, megasporogenesistakes place within a structure calleda nucellus, and it is the megasporefarthest from the  micropyle of theovary that survives.
