We depend on trees and forests for our survival. The very air we breathe is given to us by trees. Trees provide habitats for animals and livelihoods for humans. Trees mitigate climate change. But our failure to take care of our forests is threatening the very existence of mankind. Deforestation have taken a heavy toll on the forest cover of the Earth. Population explosion and commercial logging for the timber industries are the major causes of deforestation. Some effects of deforestation are mentioned below:
In the absence of trees and forests the fertile top soil is washed away by rainwater making cultivation impossible.
Trees retain rain water in the soil. Without forests the entire rainwater flows into the sea. The water is then not available as ground water.
If deforestation continues unchecked there will be scarcity of drinking water caused by droughts.
Without trees rainfall will decrease and cultivation will become impossible. This will cause famines due to scarcity of food grains.
Trees absorb the harmful Carbon dioxide and release the life supporting Oxygen. Deforestation contributes to the decrease in oxygen level and increase Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Increased Carbon dioxide level results in lungs diseases, cancer and lower life expectancy.
The increasing pollutants in the atmosphere is depleting the ozone layer which protects us from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the Sun. Added to this, acid rain are increasing.
Trees reduce air by dust and noise pollution. Trees also keep our surrounding beautiful. We get many medicines from trees.
Trees are our lifeline. We cannot survive without trees. Felling of trees is like digging our own graves. We must prevent further felling of trees and start planting more and more trees.
Conservation of trees is very important nowadays as trees are being cutted in large quantities which affects the environment in many ways like soil erosion, global warming etc. We have to conserve trees in order to avoid such disasters.
A general awakening should be created among people to enact this conservation programme.
Not only the government but also people of every society should get together to take measures to conserve trees. Every people should plant more and more trees.Plans should be made by the government to distribute plants village by village. After following the above measures, conservation of trees is possible.
