If you’re asking about the proverb, not the biblical quote, then Money is the root of all evil is correct. Greed would be closest to the original quote since it’s the love of, actually the obsessional or lustful desire to accumulate money.
The belief seems to be wrong. The profiles of leading torturers and serial killers, leading pedophiles as well does not show any special interest in money. Quite a few entrepreneurs famous for their greed never seemed to harm anyone because of it (capitalism allows that) and became unbelievable philanthropists helping stamp out major human problems.
Bible-ists usually then say money doesn’t mean money it means, let’s say, material goods, wealth, accumulation, mammon or whatever (though Aramaic for mammon and money is NOT the same). Or they’ll ape the buddhist teaching that grasping after goods is the root of all evil. But even buddhists note that it’s not grasping but desire itself that is the root of…ignorance, or false belief, or maya, the illusion of reality. And since that’s the cause of suffering, it is the root of all evil. Except to a Christian (especially a Catholic) suffering is good lots of times, especially when born as a cross and offered up to God as your martyrdom.
So, maybe, don’t cite the proverb if you can help it.

here is your answer....
We must all understand that money is something that is not real. Money is a concept that we as a society all agree on. But this wasn't always so. The principle of money came from olden times when people would use gold or silver to trade. However the constant fear of robbers and thieves meant that the people needed a safe place to put there gold. To fulfill this need the banking industry was born. People would surrender there goods, to a banker who was to be trusted, in exchange for a claimcheck. It is in these banks that the workings of what ultimately seemed like a good idea turned into one of the biggest scandals mankind has ever pulled off to date. Claimchecks where soon being used as the new medium in exchange of goods. Whenever anyone accepted a claimcheck for gold or silver "coins" in exchange for his product or service, the exchange was incomplete. The exchange was not completed until the holder of the claimcheck presented it to the banker and was paid the gold or silver. Exchanging a claimcheck for goods was also a lot easier than toting around your gold/silver coins. For instance, let's say I have one hundred gold coins stored away in the bank for safe keeping. And I'm also in dire need of a new horse for my daily travels. So when I go to buy my horse, instead of lugging around and measuring out each gold coin for purity and authenticity, I have in my hand a claimcheck from a reputable bank in the amount of 100 yen, dollars, pesos whatever.
