(b) Speed of light in diamond is 1/2.42 times the speed of light in air.

  • Refractive index of a medium describes how fast light travels through the material.

  • Refractive Index=

 \frac{c}{v}

(C= speed of light in vacuum

V= speed of light in medium)

  • Since the speed of light is maximum in vacuum (or air), by convention it's absolute refractive index is taken as 1.

  • All other materials have their refractive index greater than 1.

  • As the value of refractive index of a medium increases, the speed of light in that medium decreases.
