Oxidation means addition of oxygen in any chemical reaction.

Oxidising agent is a substance which adds oxygen to other substance in a chemical reaction.

CuO, Copper(II) oxide reacts with hydrogen to form copper and water. This is an example of redox reaction (a reaction in which oxidation and reduction takes place simultaneously). In this reaction, CuO is reduced to copper and hydrogen is oxidised to H2O. Here, CuO is oxidising agent as it is adding oxygen to hydrogen to form water and hydrogen is reducing agent as it is removing oxygen from CuO to form Cu.
