The difference in electronegativity of Cl^- ion and H^+ ion is more than the differnce in electronegativity of I^- ion and H^+ ion. More the electronegativity differnce, more will be the ionic character and less will be the covalent character.
So HI is more covalent than HCl.

HI has more covalent character than HCl.This is because Iodine is less electronegative as compared to Chlorine which leads to the difference of the electronegativity of H+ and l- to be less than the difference of the electronegativity of H+ and Cl- . Since, higher the difference between electronegativity of the compound composing atoms , lower is the covalent character and vice versa.

Hope i helped u:)
