Covering (Meninges) -

Like brain, Spinal cord is also covered by three membranes. These are -
1. Piamater - Innermost and thin layer.
2. Arachnoid membrane - Middle and wavy layer.
3. Duramater - outermost and tough layer.

Structure -

External structure - It is 40-45 cm long in adult individual. At different levels, it's diameter is also differ. It's diameter is enlarged in cervical and lumbar region. It's cervical enlargement extends upto fourth cervical. At the site of cervical region nerves are distributed to arms.
At second lumber region numerous branches of spinal cord arises, these spinal nerves collectively known as Cauda equina (horse's tail). It ends at Conus medullaris.

Internal structure - Internal structure of spinal cord can be seen by cross section. Spinal cord is divided into two halves (left and right) through through two indentations which are Posterior median sulcus and Anterior median fissure. In the section on spinal cord the inner butterfly shaped area is filled with grey matter. Spinal nerves are arises from the segments of each side of vertebral column.
