There is no "main server" it's billions of servers individually operated.
When you type in www.someplace.com you are sending a signal that finds out what computer (server) hosts that website. You are then connected to that computer and it displays the website for you.
It's almost the same as telphones. Your computer is simply calling another computer and sharing data. When you're surfing the web, you're surfing many different computers (webservers) owned by the individual(s) who own the website.
