As per the latest information reported by the government on household consumption patterns of grains indicates that a decline in rice consumption at the same time, an increase in the consumption of wheat grains from the year 2004.

The main reason of this as reported by National Sample Survey Office NSSO that, consumption of rice and wheat now made available both in villages and towns through the public distribution system that has grown remarkably and adequately.

Rural part of India witnessed increase of wheat and rice consumption from PDS to a great extent.

As per the report, even Urban India also have seen drastic cereal consumption through PDS.

Experts quoted that this increase is due to PDS reforms, resulting from decreasing prices of cereals under different schemes.
