Germany, a powerful empire in the early years of the 20th century, fought the first world war (1914-1918) alongside the Austrian empire and against the Allies ( England, France, and Russia).
- Unfortunately, the war stretched on.
- Germany made initial gains by occupying French and Belgium.
- However, by the US entry, Allies strengthened its power and win, defeating Germany and the Allied powers on November 1918.
- Defeat of the Germany and abdication of the emperor give an opportunity to parliamentary parties to recast German power.
- Weimar republic, a democratic body, took over the power of Germany.

EFFECTS OF WAR

☆ The war had a devastating impact physiologically and financially.
☆ From a continent of creditors, europe turned into one of the debtor's.
☆ Those who supported the Weimar republic, became easy targets of attack in the conservative nationalist circles. They were mockingly called 'November Criminals'.
☆ Soldiers came to be placed above civilians.
☆ Politicians and publicists laid great stress on the need for men to be aggressive, strong and masculine.
☆ The media glorified the trench life.
☆ Soldiers led miserable lives in these trenches.
☆ Aggressive war propaganda and national honour occupied central stage.

Hope it helps.
