After the National Party gained power in South Africa in 1948, its all-white government immediately began enforcing existing policies of racial segregation.

Hector Pieterson (19 August 1963 – 16 June 1976) was a South African schoolboy who was shot and killed during the Soweto uprising, when he turned around to try and pick up another stone the police opened fire on students, illegally protesting the enforcement of teaching in Afrikaans.
