Refractive index μ of a medium is the ratio of speed of light rays in vacuum to the speed of light in that medium.
Refractive index of vacuum =1 (reference) . For all transparent media it's more than 1.
μ can be calculated by measuring the angles: incidence ( i ) and refraction (r) when light rays undergo refraction at the surface between two media.
μ2 /μ1 = Sin i / Sin r.
μ1 is the index of first medium.
