Hibernating behaviour is mainly observed in ectothermic animals whose regulation of body temperature depends on external sources. Many mammals, insects and reptiles exhibit hibernating behaviour.

Hibernation is a long period of sleep that animals practice. Hibernation allows animals to preserve the body energy. Hibernation allows animals to survive during extreme cold weather when the availability of food is limited. During the period of hibernation, animals remain in their natural habitat instead of moving to warmer climates.
