Indian society is a patriarchal society where women face many disadvantages and oppressions in any walks of life. Although there are woman rising against such odds but still the larger picture is not rosy.

The literacy rate among women is about 54% as compared to that of 76% amongst men. Still not much women go for higher studies.
India has a skewed sex ratio of 940 women per 1000 men. Male child is preferred over female in our country which results in abortion of the girl child. This shows that women are disadvantaged before their birth as well.
There is a high degree of sexual division of labour in India. Work doe by women (particularly housewives) goes unrecognized, unnoticed and unpaid. Also there is a paucity of women at highly paid jobs.
There is discrimination among men and women at the workplace as well. Women are paid less for the same work than their male counterparts which is a violation of Equal Wages Act.
Considering politics, the proportion of women at legislature and state assemblies is extremely low(10% and 5% of the total strength respectively.
Also the safety of women is an issue which is gaining importance with recent incidents against women. India is the fourth unsafe country for women.
