Literary sources :

The four Vedas - Rig Veda; Sama Veda; Yajur Veda, and Atharva Veda. Archaeological

sources : Excavations conducted in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Northern Rajasthan,

along the Indus and Ghaggar rivers.

The main

features of the society were :

1. There

were four Varnas namely Brahman, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra varna were classified

on the basis of occupation and profession of the individual.

Unit of society was family, primarily monogamous and patriarchal.

Father’s property was inherited by son.

Right to property existed in respect of movable things like cattle, horse,

gold, and ornaments and also in respect of immovable property like land and

house.

enjoyed freedom and good position and equal social and religious rights.

8. Woman were

respected and had a right to choose their husband.

9.  Inter-cast

marriage prevailed.

10.  Amusements included music, dancing, chariot, racing, dicing etc.
