Muslim forces rout Romans at the Battle of Azaz, 1030 C.E.
Heartened by their new Islamic faith, the Arab tribes united for the first time in history carrying on a conquest that would forever be marked in the annals of time. Within decades the realm of the Caliphs, the political successors of the Prophet Muhammad, encompassed the whole of the Sassanid Persian Empire and most of the Byzantine Roman Empire weakened by centuries of conflict and war with one another. After the assassination of the fourth Caliph, companion, and younger cousin of the Prophet Muhammad, Ali bin Abi Talib, Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan another one of the Prophet’s companions assumed the Caliphate after the abdication of Al Hassan bin Ali bin Abi Talib; establishing the Umayyad dynasty of Caliphs that would reign for another century. In the process, expanding the boundaries of the Caliphate from Iberia in the West to the Hindu Kush in the East. Islam began spreading among the conquered populations, though the Umayyad government did not give them the same rights as Arab Muslims treating them legally as non-Muslims. This marginalized group known as mawali would play a role in championing the Abbasid claim to the Caliphate.
