Importance Petroleum is important because it is the next major energy source in India after coal. It provides fuel for . heating and lighting, lubricants for machinery and raw materials for a number of manufacturing industries.
Occurrence Most of the petroleum occurrences in India : are associated with anticlines and fault traps in the rock formations of the tertiary age.
Distribution About 63% of India’s petroleum production is from Mumbai High, 18% from Gujarat and 13% from Assam.

The development of the Indian petroleum industry began on a very slow note. It started mainly in the northeastern part of India especially in the place called Digboi in the state of Assam. Until the 1970’s, the production of petroleum and the exploration of new locations for extraction of petroleum were mainly restricted to the northeastern state in India.
