The main features of Mahalwari system are as follows:
1. It was introduced in the North-Western provinces of Bengal Presidency, Agra, Awadh (Oudh), Central parts of India, Punjab by Lord Hastings.
2. Collectors went to each village, measured lands, fields and recorded their customs.
3. Estimated revenue was added up to form the revenue that the village (mahal) had to pay in total.
4. The revenue was not permanently fixed and would be revised periodically.
5. The revenue had to be collected and paid by the village headman and thus, the role of the zamindar was removed.
