The narrator had lost her mother during the war in Holland. The woman who had kept all the things with her, deliberately refused to recognise her. Also, she felt sad looking at the way her mother's belongings were treated in Mrs. Dorling's house. They were kept in an utmost careless fashion. All this brought out the feelings of loss, helplessness and frustration in the narrator because she was not able to fulfill her mother's wish.
