Highlights the political situation of India after death of Aurangzeb
Answers
Aurangzeb died in 1707 after ruling with an Iron hand for 49 years and that too without appointing an heir.
The empire had reached it's zenith and was sure to collapse unless good leadership could save it from its collapse.
Aurangzeb's 3 sons namely: Kambaksh (Governor of Deccan) , Azam (Governor of Gujarat) and Muazzam (Governor of Kabul) started to prepare for the upcoming expensive war of succession.
Azam Shah surrounded Kambaksh near Hyderabad and defeated him. Kambaksh died the next day.
Azam then proclaimed himself the Emperor. However his victory here was short-lived. Muazzam soon clashed with him in the Battle of Jajau, 1707 where he killed Azam and his son.
Thus with the only successor left after the war of succession, Muazzam ascended the throne at the age of 63 under the title of Bahadur Shah I.
The decaying of the empire had already begun. Bahadur Shah I's rule marked the beginning of The “Later Mughals Era” where the successors henceforth were either weak and pleasure loving or puppets to stronger figures in Mughal Politics.
