जब कोइ ठोस चीज़ किसी द्रव्य मे डाली जाये तो उस द्रव्य से ठोस वस्तु पर लगने वाला उत्प्लावन बल (Buoyancy) ही अर्किमिडिज के सिद्धांत को दर्शाता है। इसके अनुसार हम ये भी समझ सकते है कि कोइ भी चीज़ तरल माध्यम मे डालने से या तो तैरने लगती है या डूब जाती है या तो आधी डूबी रह्ती है।
