Sleep" is a noun/verb; we can say: 1- Getting enough sleep is good for your health. 2- I want to sleep as soon as I get home. However, "Asleep" is an adjective, e.g. (John is asleep at the moment). ... And again, "Awake" is an adjective, e.g. (I have been awake all night long)
