Well as the title suggests, one comes to know that Dear Departed refers to someone who is close to a person's heart has left the world.

In the story we come to know that the Grandfather Mr. Abel Merryweather had passed away according to the daughter of Mr Abel. But as story moves we come to know that the daughters of Mr. Abel were not loving him but only the money which Mr Abel had. So finally when the story comes to an end that grandfather was not dead, there was only shock and horror instead of happiness or tears.

Even when he was assumed to be passed away, his daughters were neither sad nor happy over his death. They were just fighting for their father's property.

So the irony in the story Dear Departed brings out the forgotten love and sharing of feelings between families of old age which has created a large generation gap.
