the word sleep is used as a noun/verb in a sentence and it refers to the action of sleep itself.
the word asleep is used as a adverb / adjective in a sentence and it's refer to the action of sleep as already in confinuence of already completed

The difference between sleep and asleep is ,
you never say I was sleep but you say " I was asleep" or " I was sleeping". Also,the word " sleep" can't be replaced by " asleep " in the following sentence : " you should sleep" , as "you should asleep" would be grammatically incorrect . Asleep is actually ' in a state of sleep' . However , sleep is actually a torpor state resembling a deep sleep .
Wake is more like waking up or stop sleeping. Awake is the state of waking up from a sleep, or more like not sleeping .
