An inevitable fallout of industrial development and technological advancement is the generation of waste. When you travel from Central Delhi to Gazipur in the city’s east, before you can see the dumps, you spot the birds of prey circling above. Only later do you feel the stench, and surprisingly you see young boys rag picking, couples walking hand in hand across the mounds, some others taking a short cut – these are symbolic of rest of the nation, people who have made peace with the garbage because they don’t have any other option. Like Delhi, in every city of India it is the same issue. It has come to this, one because of no waste treatment centers, and second because of the rising population of the cities. If India does not take it up strongly now then the day is not far when the waste take over spaces belonging to humans.
