“Apartheid” (literal meaning = “separateness”) is a word in the Afrikaans language for the official segregation and discrimination based on race that the government of South Africa imposed in 1948. The system became known under this name all over the world. Many countries protested and called for boycotting South Africa because of it. Apartheid was finally abolished after the African National Congress (ANC) party won the 1994 elections.

Nowadays the word is also used in different contexts, e.g. the “gender apartheid” under Taliban rule in Afghanistan.
