Redox reactions are matched sets: if one species is oxidized in a reaction, another must be reduced. Keep this in mind as we look at the five main types of redox reactions: combination, decomposition, displacement, combustion, and disproportion.

The five main types of redox reactions

  • Combination

  • Decomposition

  • Displacement

  • Combustion

  • Disproportion

1) Combination reaction :

A combination reaction is a reaction where two or more elements or compounds combine to form a single compound.

2) Decomposition reaction :

A decomposition reaction is a type of chemical reaction in which a single compound breaks down into two or more elements or new compounds.

3) Displacement reaction :

Displacement reaction is a chemical reaction in which a more reactive element displaces a less reactive element from its compound.

4) Combustion Reaction :

Combustion, or burning, is a high-temperature exothermic redox chemical reaction between a fuel and an oxidant, usually atmospheric oxygen, that produces oxidized, often gaseous products, in a mixture termed as smoke .

5) Disproptionation reaction:

Disproportionation reaction is a chemical reaction, typically a redox reaction, where a molecule is transformed into two or more dissimilar products.
