Those reaction in which a compound splits up into two or more simpler substances are known as decomposition reaction.
For example- CaCO3 Arrow ^heat CaO +CO2
When calcium carbonate is heated then it formed calcium oxide and carbon dioxide.

Hola there,
Decomposition reaction.
In such reaction, a single reactant breaks down to give simpler products.
AB --› A + B
Ex: CaCO3 --heat--› CaO + CO2
There are three types of decomposition reaction.
1) Thermal decomposition: When a decomposition reaction is carried out by heating, it is called a thermal decomposition reaction.
Ex: 2FeSO4 --Heat--› Fe2O3 + SO2 + SO3
2) Photochemical decomposition: If the energy of sunlight is used to carry out the decomposition reaction, it is called photochemical decomposition.
Ex: 2AgBr --sunlight--› 2Ag + Br2
3) Electrolytic decomposition: If the electric current is used to carry out decomposition reaction. It is called electrolytic decomposition.
Ex: 2H2O ---› 2H2 + O2
Hope this helps...:)
