HELLO!!
Before I begin with my speech on Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, I would like to thank each one of you for joining me in this small Endeavour to pay homage to this great personality. As proud citizens of India, we should never forget the contributions of those legendary personalities born on our land and greatly contributed towards our nation’s growth. It goes without saying that one such personality was Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, also called as The Missile Man of India.
Awarded with Bharat Ratna, the complete name of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam is Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam and he was the 11th Indian President who served the nation from the year 2002 until 2007. He was chosen against Lakshmi Sehgal in the year 2002 and drew support from Bharatiya Janata Party as well as the Indian National Congress – the two principal Indian political parties. As we all know that by profession he was a scientist as well as an Indian administrator.
He worked with ISRO, i.e. Indian Space Research Organization and DRDO, i.e. Defence Research and Development Organization as an aerospace engineer before being elected as the 11th Indian President. What earned him the sobriquet The Missile Man of India was his development of the launch vehicle and ballistic missile technology. Besides, the Pokhran-II nuclear tests undertaken in India in the year 1998 post the actual 1974 nuclear test placed him in a pivotal political, technical and organizational role.
His frequent interactions with the community of students as well as his stirring speeches made him the youth icon. In fact, he launched a mission in the year 2011 called ‘What Can I Give Movement’, which was aimed at the Indian youth and laid stress on combating corruption in the country.
But did you know who inspired him from whom millions of people draw inspiration? Well, there were many, but If I were to mention one name that would be Dr. Vikram Sarabhai.
Dr. Vikram Sarabhai when interviewed Abdul Kalam for the position of rocket engineer was one of the first persons to have realized the hidden potential of Dr. Abdul Kalam. He realized his potential much before than Abdul Kalam himself could realize it and Sarabhai envisaged him fit into a larger canvas.
The entire interview was for Abdul Kalam as a complete moment of truth where his dream was enveloped by a bigger dream of a larger than life figure. The remaining story is about how he became the missile man of India whose passion was fiercely ignited by the great visionary scientist Dr. Vikram Sarabhai. The best part about great Abdul Kalam was that all his life he stayed grounded and never tried to attain his goals for selfish reasons rather he continued to remain active all his life till his last breath and give back mankind whatever he could.
This is all I have to say about this great and humble personality. Thank you all!
