Tap roots have one primary elongated root with small hair-like projections. These are usually found in dicot plants. Tap roots have shape like water running from tap.  On the other hand, fibrous roots do not have one main stem. It only has a small disc at the end of the stem and rest of the roots are coming out as thin projections with many branches. They look scattered and are found in monocot plants.
