If current is greater than the rated current of an appliance tends to flow through it, the fuse wire melts and therefore disconnects the appliance from the mains and saves the appliance from high current damage.

If a current larger than a specified value flows in a circuit, temperature of fuse wire increases to its melting point. The fuse wire melts and the circuit breaks.

As the current in a wire increases so does the heat generated. A fuse is simply a thinner piece of wire in the circuit. If the current gets too high the thin wire will melt and stop the current.
