सन 1857 तक यह महाराजा रणजीत सिंह के शासन के अधीन पंजाब राज्य (पंजाब हिल्स के सीबा राज्य को छोड़कर) का हिस्सा था। सन 1950 मे इसे केन्द्र शासित प्रदेश बनाया गया, लेकिन 1971 मे इसे, हिमाचल प्रदेश राज्य अधिनियम-1971 के अन्तर्गत इसे 25 जनवरी 1971 को भारत का अठारहवाँ राज्य बनाया गया।
