900=90×10=90×(2×5)=(90×2)×5=180×5 and

720=90×8=90×(2×4)=(90×2)×4=180×4

180 is the greatest common factor for 900 and 720.

It is obvious that both ribbons can be cut into 90-cm long strips (10 strips for the 900-cm ribbon and 8 strips for the 720-cm ribbon), but because 10 and 8 are even, you could tie together pieces in pairs to make 5 tied-up strips from the 900-cm ribbon, and 4 from the 720-cm ribbon.
