"Hind Swaraj is the most significant tract on political thought of Mahatma Gandhi."
In this famous book written as early as in 1909, Gandhi ji drew the contrast between the spiritual, moral values of Indian society. He reserved his harshest language for the English parliamentary system and described all western political power as "brute force".
For Gandhi ji "Swaraj" meant more than mere political independence. It meant India’s spiritual liberation through a fundamental change in each individual's moral perception. Gandhi ji believed that power is of two kinds - one based on physical force, the other rooted in 'satya' and 'ahinsa'.
Non - violence would be the ordering principle in Gandhi ji's 'Swaraj'. Majority rule based on tge western model would be inappropriate however because Gandhi ji believed that it ignored the great mass of people.
