किसी नगर में सड़क के किनारे एक ज्योतिषी बैठा करता था । लोगों का भविष्य बताकर वह जो धन कमाता, उसी से उसका जीवन-यापन होता था । प्रतिदिन वह सड़क के किनारे आकर बैठ जाता और जन्मपत्री के चित्र आदि सड़क पर सजाता, ताकि लोगों को स्वयं यह पता चले कि वह एक महान ज्योतिषी तथा हस्तरेखा विशेषज्ञ है ।
परंतु सत्य यह था कि वह लोगों को मूर्ख बनाता था । उसके आबंडर को देख लोग उसके चारों ओर इकट्ठा हो जाते और अपने भविष्य के बारे में विभिन्न प्रश्न पूछते और उसके द्वारा बताई गईं बातों से प्रसन्न हो उसे बदले में धन देते ।
कभी-कभी जब ज्योतिषी का भाग्य अच्छा होता तो वह अधिक धन कमाता, परंतु कभी ऐसा भी होता कि उसके ग्राहक उसे बहुत कम धन देते । एक दिन वह अपने ग्राहकों को उनके भविष्य में होने वाली आश्चर्यजनक और अद्भुत घटनाओं के विषय में बता रहा था ।
लोग चारों तरफ से उसे घेरकर बैठे उसकी बातों को बड़े चाव से सुन रहे थे । तभी एक व्यक्ति दौड़ता हुआ उसके पास आया और बोला कि उसके घर में चोरी हो गई है तथा घर का सारा सामान बिखरा पड़ा है । यह सुनते ही ज्योतिषी घबरा कर उठ खड़ा हुआ और तेजी से अपने घर की ओर भागा ।
तभी अचानक रास्ते में एक अजनबी व्यक्ति ने उसे रोक कर पूछा : ”क्षमा कीजिए श्रीमान ! क्या मैं जान सकता हूं आप दौड़ क्यों रहे हैं ? क्या कोई दुर्घटना हो गई है ?” ”हां, हां अभी-अभी किसी ने आकर मुझे सूचना दी है कि मेरे घर में चोरी हो गई है !” घबराए हुए ज्योतिषी ने कहा ।
अपरिचित व्यक्ति मुस्करा कर बोला : ”किसी अन्य व्यक्ति ने आपको सूचना दी है । इसका अर्थ यह हुआ कि आपको स्वयं इस विषय में कोई भी ज्ञान नहीं है । क्या यह आश्चर्यजनक नहीं है कि जो व्यक्ति दूसरों के भाग्य की भविष्यवाणी करता हो, उसे स्वयं अपने दुर्भाग्य का पता नहींहो ।”
