1. . About two hundred years ago, Indian society was not as it is now. It had imposed many barriers on women. They could not go to school, they could not marry according to their will. In some part of the country, sati pratha existed and widows were praised if they chose to death by burning themselves on the funeral pyre of their husbands.
2. .The society that existed in those days was also caste based. People were divided along lines of caste.

3 .Brahmans and Kshatriyas considered themselves as “upper castes”. Others, such as traders and moneylenders often referred to as Vaishyas were placed after them. Then came peasants, and artisans such as weavers and potters referred to as Shudras.
