Gandhi ji never contented himself with large political and economic solution. He believed in politics which could alleviate the problems of the common people at the lowest level.

Though Gandhi Ji had accompanied Raj Kumar Shukla to assist him in fighting against the injustice of British landlords, yet he did more for the people of Champaran. He observed their miserable poverty and lack of basic amenities, such as lack of schools, dispensaries, and general cleanliness; he called his son, wife, and other disciples to Champaran to help the poor. Devdas, Gandhi’s youngest son arrived at Champaran from the ashram and so did Mrs. Gandhi. Primary schools were opened in six villages. Kasturba taught the ashram rules to the women on personal cleanliness.

Health conditions were miserable at Champaran. Gandhi arranged a doctor to volunteer his services for six months.
