After Blenheim is considered to be an anti-war poem. It was written in 1796 by Robert Southey who was an English Romantic poet laureate. The Battle of Blenheim took place in 1704. In the poem small children ask their grandfather about a skull which they have found. The old man tells them about the sad consequences of the war but at the same time says that it was a great victory.
Southey wrote it during his Jacobin years, around 1790 - 1800. He was so much against the battle that he even refused to look at the palace which was named for the battle. However, by 1820 he changed his mind and considered the battle to be the greatest victory of the British.
