Given : Historically, scores on the semester exam for a particular college professor are normally distributed

Mean = 74

standard deviation of 8.5

A student scores 92 on the exam.

To Find :  How many standard deviations from the mean is this score?

A) 18

B) 8.5

C) 1.13

D) 2.12

Solution:

Mean = 74

standard deviation = 8.5

Score = 92

Let say n standard deviations away from the mean is score

n ( SD) =  | Value - Mean |

=> n ( 8.5) = | 92 - 74 |

=> n(8.5) = 18

=> n = 18/8.5

=> n = 2.1176

=> n = 2.12

2.12  standard deviations from the mean is score
