social service in ancient time was not much good as we have they use to do there work by themselves firstly they transfer letters to each other with the help of birds.
They sometimes used horses too for giving the information from one place to another.
As social work has its roots in the attempt of society at large to deal with the problem poverty and inequality.

Ancient Indian history is well known for it's humane attitude towards social service. Right from the times of our recorded history we have evidences from literature which prove that kings had taken numerous measures for their subject's welfare. For instance we are well aware about king Ashoka the great who had taken welfare initiatives like planting trees, constructing roads, digging wells etc., he also promoted peace and tranquility throughout his empire. Not only kings remained the solitary examples of social service, wealthy sections of society like merchant guilds and traders had made generous grants to improve the lot of society.
