It was Ghiyasuddin Balban, the ninth Sultan of the Mamluk dynasty (1200 – 1287) who adopted a policy of ‘Blood and Iron’ during his rule. The term basically means using ruthless, even unethical means of putting down rebellion and enemies. Balban did not hesitate to use treachery or ruthless force, against people whom he though were his enemies. Though it initially helped him control and build his empire, the list of his enemies grew quietly.
