Alvars were a group of 12 devotional saints in the 7th and the 12th centuries who were devoted to the Hindu god Shiva in Tamil Nadu. There were 12 Alvars, who came from equally divergent backgrounds, the best known being Periyalvar, his daughter Andal, Tondaradippodi Alvar and Nammalvar
