The reaction of people and colonial government to Civil Disobedience Movement was completely different. Salt March 1930 and People's Reaction:
1. Gandhi sent 11 demands to Lord Irwin, out of which one was to abolish Salt tax. The high tax and British's monopoly over its production angered the poor and rich alike.
2. When Irwin ignored the demands, Gandhi launched the Civil Disobedience campaign. He walked from his ashram in Sabarmati to Dandi where he broke the law by manufacturing salt.
3. Thousands came to accompany Gandhi on his walk and listen to him talk about swaraj. In many other places in the country too, the salt law was broken.
4. People reacted in other ways too. The foreign cloth was boycotted, peasants stopped paying revenue and chaukidari taxes, tribes broke the colonial forest laws and village officials resigned. The reaction of the Colonial Govt:
5. The government started arresting Congress leaders including Abdul Gaffar Khan and Mahatma Gandhi that led to angry demonstrations.
6. When Gandhi was arrested, industrial workers of Sholapur attacked all the buildings that stood for British rules like police stations and municipal buildings.
7. British began with brutal repression. Thousands of people were beaten and arrested including peaceful satyagrahis, women, and children.
