A mineral is a naturally-occurring substance formed through geological processes that has a characteristic chemical composition, a highly ordered atomic structure and specific physical properties. A rock is a naturally occurring aggregate of minerals and/or mineraloids.

■☆》Minerals can be divided into their constituent elements. The mineral quartz is composed of two elements, silicon and oxygen. Other minerals may contain many elements. For example, the mineral amphibole is made up of a laundry list of elements including sodium, calcium, magnesium, iron, aluminum, silicon, and oxygen.
●☆》Rocks are generally composed of an assemblage of minerals. For example, the andesite from Mars contains quartz, feldspar, amphibole, and other minerals.Rocks are classified into three distinct groups - igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic - and each is discussed in a separate section. Each rock group is further subdivided into subgroups that are defined by the mode of origin of the rocks. Igneous rocks form when magma, molten rock, rises upward toward the surface and are classified into two types on the basis of texture (grain size) and composition.
