This is the reason they are also calledas 'pearls of ocean .Body of diatoms is covered by siliceous shell known asfrustule. 'Diatomaceous earth' is the accumulation of large deposits ofdiatoms that forms a siliceous covering extending for several 100 m formed in billions of years.

diatoms have cell wall with unique characteristic this is why , it is called as "pealrls of ocean". ... diatomaceous earthhearth : because of presence of silica cell wall of diatoms are indestructible . they pile up at the bottom of water body and leads to formation of 'diatomaceous earths' over billions of year...
