 The industrial sector

has a major stake in the consumption of water from the Tungabhadra basin. The

demand for the water from the basin has been on the rise too. 80% of the

population of that region is reliant on agriculture which is water consuming. The

AP part of the basin that is located in lower parts has lower rainfall and

affected by drought conditions. Lack of enough green cover lead to water run-off.

Surface flow continues as usual without the underground system getting recharged.

Also gradually, the water storage capacity of the Tungabhadra dam is lost.

The first step to improve is to have an effective water resources

management system to regulate water consumption. The other solutions are afforestation,

encouraging change in cropping pattern throughout the basin, controlling mining

activity.
