Photosynthesis (‘photo’ - light; ‘synthesis’ - putting together) is a process by which green plants make their own food from simple molecules like carbon dioxide and water by using sunlight captured by the green pigment called chlorophyll.

Photosynthesis requires carbon dioxide, water, sunlight and chlorophyll pigment. They are called the raw materials of photosynthesis.

An overall equation for photosynthesis can be represented as given below:-

• Raw materials of photosynthesis

1. Carbon dioxide is absorbed from the air.
2. Water is absorbed from the soil.

4. Chlorophyll, the green pigment present in leaves that captures the sunlight.

• Products of photosynthesis

1. Simple sugar like glucose is formed. Glucose is stored as starch in the leaves.
2. Oxygen is released as a by-product.
