Humus significantly affects the bulk density of soil and contributes to itsretention of moisture and nutrients. ...Humus is the dark organic matter that forms in soil when dead plant and animal matter decays. Humus has many nutrients that improve the health of soil, nitrogen being the most important.

Humus is dark organic material that forms in soil when plant and animal matter decays. When animals die or plants drop their leaves, twigs and other organic compounds then these are piled up into humus.

Humus is important because, it moisture in soil, loosens the soil permitting better aeration and drainage, and encourages the increase of the soil organisms which help make nutrients available to plants. It adds body to light soil and loosens heavy sticky soil. Its most important role is that it contains  nitrogen. So, we can say that humus is directly or indirectly plays an important role for the survival of plants and animals.
