It’s actually one of science’s big mysteries, but Greg Foot explains what a sneeze is and why your eyelids shut down in response.

When stimulated, the brain stem's sneeze center orders muscle contractions from esophagus to sphincter

thts the reason

It's pretty simple, actually. At their medial corners, your eyes have drain holes, each of which leads to a tear duct or This drainage system conveniently disposes of tears, sparing unsightliness and facial dermatological problems that might result from tears running down our face all the time.

The name, , is a clue for where those tears end up. They enter the and, from there, drain into the throat, are swallowed, and, ultimately, recycled/repurposed. Very tidy.

So tears drain down a pipe connecting the eyes to the nose. And that’s the key to the the puzzle of why eye squeezing is part of the sneeze reflex.

(And no, closing the eyes doesn't keep the eyeballs from popping out when you sneeze. That can’t happen because the lungs don't connect behind the eyeballs.)
